ABOUT

I have always believed that strong public schools are key to preserving democracy and opportunity. That belief is what led me to run for School Board in the first place and why I am running again.

As the daughter of a nationally recognized education leader and a professional civil rights-era folk singer, I grew up in a family that believed in the promise of education and equal rights. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, attended local public schools, and attended UCLA for undergraduate and law school.

After settling in Santa Monica, I went on to practice law and to be involved with several nonprofits, and community and government agencies – including Clinica Legal del Pueblo, the Ocean Park Community Center (now The People Concern), the City of Santa Monica’s Rent Control Board and City Attorney’s office. My work with our schools began as a parent activist while my children attended Will Rogers Elementary, Lincoln Middle School and Samohi.  I have lived and worked in this community for 45+ years.

My professional experience and knowledge of our schools throughout the District have enabled me to play a unique role on the School Board since I have firsthand experience of schools in different school pathways. I have been a driving force for equity in SMMUSD schools and in supporting the District’s mission to conquer the decades-old opportunity/achievement gap. Serving both as School Board President and Board Vice President, I have been fortunate to be part of strong collaborative leadership teams and have also been able to mentor new leadership.
